Choosing Safe Stops
You may have completed your route planning over the summer but now is the best time to review the route with the driver to identify challenges and concerns before the winter months hit and cause additional difficulties in loading zones and/or roadways. Not only can predetermined school bus stops present more difficulty in winter months, but specific school vehicle stops created for already challenging areas (geographically or otherwise) can be significantly more cumbersome when snow and ice are present. It is common that route and loading/unloading difficulties fail to present themselves until after the driver(s) have had consistent exposure to the students, terrain, construction, and traffic patterns. It is critical that contractors remain proactive in maintaining the safety of the stops, and students while also remaining compliant with school vehicle laws and regulations.
