I Hadn’t Thought of That … Student Discipline Strategies for the New School Year
With the start of the new school year, transportation contractors continue to face challenges with student discipline on the school bus. Clear policies and practices are important when addressing student misconduct. Transportation contractors should be consistent in their response to misconduct on the school bus, but contractors should be mindful there are other considerations if the student has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), which may limit the extent of the discipline issued. Accordingly, it is important for contractors to work with their school districts to develop and implement discipline procedures on the school bus, and to ensure that the contractor, drivers, and aides have all of the information they need to assess discipline. Additionally, contractors are encouraged to train their staff on appropriate methods of handling verbal and physical altercations on the school bus.
