Richard Kelly is an insurance claims professional with over 25 years experience handling, managing, and auditing property/casualty insurance claims and litigation. His professional experience includes technical and management positions in insurance companies and law firms. He provides insurance consulting services to insurance organizations and has testified in trials and depositions as an expert witness and as a corporate representative on various property/casualty insurance issues including complex coverage, damages, adjusting practices, and bad faith.

Experience includes:

Vice President – The Harleysville Insurance Companies – Harleysville, Pa.

Responsibilities over time included both claims and underwriting operations. Scope included a staff of 100 people directing operations in 30 states. Duties include management and technical direction, training, quality auditing, personnel administration, agency support, regulatory compliance, legal analysis, etc. Audited claims operations and subsidiaries for compliance with regulations and best practices. Provided follow up plans and support for operations as needed. Prior positions within Harleysville included AVP, Home Office Property Claims Manager, and Catastrophe Claims Manager. Directed Harleysville’s CAT Team response to several multi-million dollar catastrophe events.

Attorney at Law – Post & Schell, P.C. – Philadelphia, Pa.

Defense attorney concentrating in insurance defense litigation including complex property and liability coverage analysis, manuscript policy review and revision, and defense of bad faith allegations. Case load included multi-million dollar commercial losses as well as personal lines claims. Also responsible for fraud investigation/defense and subrogation litigation. Frequent speaking engagements at training seminars for insurance carriers and at industry wide forums.

Claims Manager – Metropolitan Property and Casualty Insurance Company – King of Prussia, Pa.

Positions included Manager, Supervisor, Instructor, and Adjuster. As Manager/Supervisor, managed staff of up to 20 people handling claims in 5 states from office and field locations. As Adjuster, investigated and negotiated claims in the Philadelphia and suburban area. As Instructor, developed and administered local and national training programs on all aspects of technical claim handling, personnel management, and insurance law. Catastrophe Team member providing on sight/off site claims response, management, and planning with extended assignment for Hurricane Andrew in Miami, Florida.

Adjunct Professor – Gwynedd Mercy University – Gwynedd Valley, Pa.

Classes taught include Business Law, Human Resource Management, and Technical Writing in the programs leading to Associates and Bachelors degrees in Business Administration.

Instructor/Author – Insurance Institute of America/Insurance Society of Philadelphia – Malvern, Pa.

Authored portions of the text book “Property Loss Adjusting” that is used as part of the course of study leading to the “Associate in Claims” designation. Also provided consultative input on other insurance texts for the IIA. On going presentation of various insurance classes.
