And Another Thing...

On September 7, 2015 President Barack Obama signed an executive order requiring federal contractors to provide up to seven days of paid sick leave a year. This order grants employees of federal contractors at least one hour of paid sick leave for every thirty hours worked up to seven paid sick days a year. Individual contractors can also opt to offer more paid sick leave. This order would affect 300,000 Americans who are not currently eligible for any paid sick leave and also takes into effect absences as a result of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.

The order must first go through a public comment period and will only apply to contracts starting in 2017 allowing companies competing for government work to incorporate additional costs into their bids. This order follows previous new benefit announcements for workers that were publicized by the White House earlier this year. Executive actions have been made to raise the minimum wage for employees under federal contracts, make it more difficult for federal contractors who have violated labor laws to do business with the government, and protect gay and transgender workers from discrimination.

RC Kelly Law Associates will continue to monitor this order as it progresses and publish updates as they become available. For more information call 215-896-3846 or help@rckelly.com
