Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, is a federal law that protects employees from being discriminated against in the workplace based on sex, race, color, national origin and religion. An employer’s liability for workplace harassment may depend primarily on the status of the harasser.  The Vance case 646 F.3d 461 (2013), clarified the difference between an ‘employee’ and a ‘supervisor.’
